Resolve ISP DNS issues with Public DNS service

We would like to share some information about some public Domain Name Server (DNS) services to enhance your internet experience and resolve some regularly surfacing private DNS issues. Many times our clients have faced problems where their sites do not open from any particular internet connection which mostly occurs due to issues with their ISP's DNS service, hence, today we would like you to look into it deeply and provide some solutions for the same. Please find below the details which we hope will be quite helpful for you.

What is a DNS server?
The DNS protocol is an important part of the web's infrastructure, serving as the Internet's phone book: every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. The purpose of a DNS server is to enable people and applications to lookup records in DNS tables and fetch the requested URL accordingly. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading, so your computer may be performing hundreds of lookups a day.

Most DNS servers are now private, meaning that they are configured to only provide service to the people and organizations who own and maintain them like the Internet Service Providers and their customers. The faster any requested URL is resolved by the DNS service the better is the access to the World-wide web.

Public DNS services
A few domain name servers on the Internet provide DNS resolutions for anyone who requests it from them. These are known as "Public DNS Servers". Many times the private DNS servers may not perform to the best of its expected capibility or may get misconfigured and may not resolve the requested URLs properly. In such cases these public DNS servers may come handy and prove very useful. These are mostly set of 2 IP addresses that can be used as alternative DNS IPs of your current providers.

List of Public DNS IPs

• Google Public DNS - 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
• DNSadvantage.com - 156.154.70.1 and 156.154.71.1
• OpenDNS.com - 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220

How to configure?
Configuring any DNS is not a tough exercise. A general step by step guide is given below for Windows users:

• Go the Control Panel.
• Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, then Manage network connections.
• Select the connection for which you want to configure Public DNS. For example:
  • To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.
  • To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and click Properties.
• If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
• Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
• Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
• Click OK.
• Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
• Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Public DNS servers as given above.
• Restart the connection you selected in step 3.
