This means that a lot of computers are making lots of requests to overflow the server and making it unavailable to the rest of the internet.</p> <p>The problem of a DDoS attack is that you don't know who, what or why the attack is taking place (The server itself has not been compromised).</p> <p>There is also not much you can do to stop it right away but we are working on a permanent solution and implemented CISCO guard on server. Cisco guard is a temporary traffic filtering agent in the event of a DDOS attack. The CISCO guard is blocking the IP addresses and this process will take almost 3 - 6 hours. The idea behind these measures is to ensure that our email system is not viewed suspiciously by other service providers, which would lead to email originating from our servers to be deferred or rejected.</p> <p>A lot of spam email that gets caught in our anti-spam filters, and is reported to us by the feedback loop with other email service providers, shows a high correlation with spoofed envelope from addresses. For example, when a user <strong>a@domain.com</strong> authenticates with smtp.domain.com in order to send a mail from our outbound servers, he can currently set whatever he wants as his "from" address, including email addresses that don't actually exist. This is a widely used method for email spoofing. In order to avoid such instances, users will now be asked to register a set of identities from their webmail interface for email addresses that need be used to send email. Every identity must have a valid email address, which must be authorized before it can be used to send email. The process to do so is fairly straightforward -</p> <p>1. The user must log on to Webmail as <strong>a@domain.com</strong>, and add the necessary identities, say <strong>sales@domain.com</strong> and <strong>x@gmail.com</strong>.</p> <p>2. The system will send verification emails to <strong>sales@domain.com</strong> and <strong>x@gmail.com</strong>, asking them: "<strong>a@domain.com</strong> is trying to use <strong>x@gmail.com</strong> to send email, do you want to allow this?"</p> <p>3. As a result of this change, the system will no longer allow passwords of the type that could be deemed vulnerable to sabotage attempts. Email account passwords must fulfill the following criteria henceforth &ndash;</p> <ol> <li>The password must contain at least 8 characters (and can be up to 32 characters long).</li> <li>The password cannot contain the email prefix in its exact form. As a result your site is infected with the virus and visitors starts getting Virus warnings while visiting your website.</p> <p>Since this process is entirely automated by the crackers and they generally establish the connection on the default ftp port which is 21, hence we decided to change our FTP server port to 990 with implicit SSL option ON. We&nbsp;have enabled this option&nbsp;from&nbsp;Monday,&nbsp;May 10, 2010 on all the FTP servers of our Windows Cluster. With this change the hackers the attacks should reasonably cease down and your sites would remain clean. Our investigations have revealed that these alerts are due to an injection attack on packages hosted on our servers. The FTP logs of the infected packages indicate that the machines of the clients/resellers who own those domains are compromised and have been used to upload malicious content to their respective hosting packages. <b>What is a Gumblar Attack?</b> Gumblar appears to be a combination of exploit scripts and malware. The scripts are embedded in .html, .js and .php files using obfuscated Javascript. They load malware content from third party sites without the user's knowledge. It also steals FTP credentials from the victim's computer, which allows it to spread and infect additional sites. Therefore, when someone visits an infected site they get infected and if they have FTP credentials for a website on their machine then those sites will get infected too. This explains the exponential growth of the exploit in such a short space of time. <b>What makes it different from previous malware exploits? </b> There are a number of aspects to this exploit that both make it difficult to remove and help it spread. Firstly, it is infecting users who are browsing legitimate websites, if these users are webmasters then it is infecting their websites by using their FTP credentials to inject the script onto their site. The obfuscated malicious code is dynamically generated. This makes it difficult to detect and difficult to automatically remove. Please find the following details for your references and awareness about this issue. <b># The reason why this virus comes is only because of the either of the following:</b> <ol> <li> You have a weak or vulnerable code on your website which is exploited by a hacker.</li> <li> Your FTP password is weak and generally a dictionary word which is cracked by brute force attempts.</li> </ol> <b># How Iframe Virus Works?</b> <b>The hackers behind this have not actually “hacked” into servers, </b>but are using the Webs OWN programming errors to inject this code into search results pages created by the websites own internal search engines! The hacker searches for popular keywords (like “furniture” on the Wal-Mart website) using its internal search engine. But instead of running a normal search, the hacker adds on an HTML command to the end of his search string. This command then opens up an invisible “iframe” window in the victims browser which then redirects to a malicious website, which then (if successful) installs fake antispyware or a version of the “Zlob Trojan Horse” - a malware on the victims computer. These hackers actually have great Google rankings too! and in order to boost their Google rankings, websites often save a copy of these search results and submit them to Google. When a victim searches Google for the keyword, these cached search results then pop up, with the malicious code now inside them. <b># How the hack is done?</b> <ol> <li>Client side PC gets infected with the virus from the search results.</li> <li>Virus gets FTP username/password from the FTP clients.</li> <li>Using the username/password, the virus then downloads the index files, adds the iframe code in it and re-uploads it to the web server.</li> <li>The iframe code points to the same virus. So, anyone accessing this website gets infected with the same virus, and it spreads again!!!!</li> </ol> <b># Solutions </b> <ol> <li>Ensure that your code is free from such kind of vulnerabilities.</li> <li>Change all the FTP passwords regularly and keep them safe and use a combination of alphabets + numbers + special characters.</li> <li>Before updating the new password in their FTP clients, perform a full system Virus scan with a reliable virus scanner updated with the latest virus definition files.</li> <li>Also try not to save (remember) the FTP username/password on FTP clients or public computers.</li> <li>Check the website files for any unrecognizable or encrypted codes that are not known to you or is not a part of the website’s function. Due to this reason the websites on the servers either do not open or display the earlier/older versions. Many of our clients have been complaining similar experiences from past few weeks with our servers too. We have been monitoring the problem and can assure you that our servers are working fine and your websites are opening perfectly with other internet connections. <b>What is the Problem?</b> In technical terms this issue can be regarded as a DNS resolver problem. A DNS service is used to resolve the requests to translate domains into IP's and when you use your Internet Service Provider you generally rely over your ISP's DNS resolvers to resolve the sites for you. If your ISP is not keeping the records healthy and updated then you might see the above mentioned issues. <b>The Solution</b> Although the solution of such issues is basically on the ISP and as early they give it a thought it can be resolved but we can still offer you an alternative solution to the problem, the solution which we use and are very happy. In order to meet Customer's demands for better anti-spam protection for their inboxes, free email providing hosts are finding the high costs of processing millions of spam emails per day intolerable. As a result, several large email hosts like YAHOO have instituted anti-spam policies (sometimes referred to as Greylisting) that stop deliveries of emails from IP addresses that send a large number of messages to their servers in a specified period of time. The period of time and what is considered a "large number" varies, depending upon the host and this information is not published. The spam prevention measures of the large mail providers have reached such levels that if you are sending more than just a few messages to them, your mail server's IP will likely be greylisted. The email services which are using virtual domains on shared IPs, find their mail server IPs unduly targeted for greylisting. It does not matter that our customers are sending legitimate mails; the large mail hosts are still flagging it as spam. This is a problem affecting all companies that send a large number of messages to @yahoo.com, @aol.com, @msn.com, @hotmail.com, and similar email accounts - not just TechnoDG - and no one has a sure-fire solution. All we can suggest you is to wait for couple of hours when the greylisting would automatically get removed from the IP and your mail would be automatically tried from our wait queue and get delivered. Presently, all of these domains have extremely stringent anti-spam filtering policies in place. If one of our customers configures their email account hosted with us to forward to their personal mailbox with one of the noted service providers and the service provider detects that message as spam, they believe that we are the source of the spam. As a result, our mail server gets blacklisted, even though we are not responsible for this spam. Unfortunately, even though we are not responsible for this spam, these service providers noted have repeatedly been blacklisting our mail servers, causing legitimate email to be blocked. If you or your customers have forwarders configured to one of the above service providers, please remove the forwarding and convert them to POP3 accounts or setup their forwarding to their local address within their own domain. Also, please note that this change only impacts forwarders. You will still be able to send email to the above noted service providers. Sat, 04 Nov 2006 06:26:26 TechnoDG.com Catch All Accounts Policy for Linux & Windows 2003 Mail Servers http://helpdesk.technodg.com/announcements_view.php?id=15 Dear Customer, With effect from October 26, 2006, TechnoDG will no longer be supporting "catch all" or "default" mail accounts on our shared, reseller Linux and Windows 2003 hosting platforms. Recently, since last couple of months our mail server has been suffering from performance issues directly attributed to catch-all mail accounts being attacked by spammers. The biggest impact they have on our servers is when a domain with a catch-all mail accounts configured is hit by a dictionary spam attack. This style of spam attack randomly tries to send email messages to thousands of unique email addresses to a particular domain. When the catch-all account is configured, it causes the mail server to accept all of this spam and valuable processing time and resources are wasted dealing with the massive flood of messages. In some cases, the attack is so severe that it causes the mail server to become completely unresponsive. A secondary impact of these dictionary attacks occurs after the catch-all account is deleted. Because the spammers have successfully delivered email to thousands of unique accounts, they now continue to send email to these email addresses on a daily basis. Even once the catch-all has been disabled for a domain, these repeated attempts to deliver mail to non-existent addresses can sometimes be so severe that the net effect is a denial of service attack on our mail server's SMTP service. Instead of using a catch-all mail account, we suggest that you configure mail forwarders for individual email addresses that you actually want to accept incoming email for, and then direct those forwarders to a single POP3 account. For example, if you want to accept email for info@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com, and support@yourdomain.com, but want all of that email to be directed to owner@yourdomain.com, you would setup a POP3 account for owner@yourdomain.com, and setup the other email addresses as forwarders. Please note, that if you already have a catch-all account configured, we encourage you to disable it else we would be doing it from our side. The new Mail Server is named as VIPER.DNSRACKS.COM and comes with the following configuration : Intel Dual Core 3.2 Ghz Processor 2 GB RAM 2 X 250 GB HDD RAID 1 The system with RAID1 would ensure that in any event of failure of primary harddrive we can get you up and online within minutes from the second harddrive. We'll be performing the migration of all mailboxes, mail data & configuration files of the OWL server users to the new server VIPER on Sunday July 30, 2006 at 11 PM IST (GMT 5.30 +). During the migration HELM (Control panel) would remain stopped however all other services including Mail Service would continue working without any downtime. The process of migration is outlined as below : 1) We'll stop the HELM on OWL server to prevent creation of any new mailboxes. 2) The mailboxes migration & creation would start on the new server. 3) Once the mailboxes are created we'll change the DNS zones of the mail records to point to the new server. This would route your new incoming mails to the LION server. 4) We'll sync old mails from the DOVE Server and move them to LION Server. 5) Once everything is completed we'll start the HELM Control Panel. We anticipate no downtime in this process as during the time the migration would be taking place your mails would continue to work on the old server. As soon as the migration is completed we'll point the MAIL IP' to the new server and route all new mails to the new mail server. We'll also copy the old mails your address books & the mailsettings to the new server.
