Important Security Enhancement :: Windows FTP Server Port has been changed

Dear Clients,

This is to inform you that the FTP service has been stopped on Port 21 at the Windows 2003 server. From Now

  1. FTP will not work on port 21 (Default FTP port), works only with Port 990
  2. FTP url (ftp://ftp.example.com) will not work on browser
  3. You have to use Port 990 and Implicit SSL option (All client FTP software have this option) on client FTP software to do FTP on our Windows servers.

Iframe insertion on website’s webpages is a very serious and common problem affecting the websites these days. Everyday thousands of websites are infected with the virus content due to iframe and get blocked at the Google as "THIS SITE MAY HARM YOUR COMPUTER"

How do the hackers do this ?

When you visit an infected site the trojan is dropped on your system, the trojan in turns locates the ftp password for your website stored in your ftp software and establishes a connection with your website by remotely downloading the index file from your site and then uploading the infected content. As a result your site is infected with the virus and visitors starts getting Virus warnings while visiting your website.

Since this process is entirely automated by the crackers and they generally establish the connection on the default ftp port which is 21, hence we decided to change our FTP server port to 990 with implicit SSL option ON. We have enabled this option from Monday, May 10, 2010 on all the FTP servers of our Windows Cluster. With this change the hackers the attacks should reasonably cease down and your sites would remain clean. This process would require you to make some changes in the way you connect to our servers using your ftp client like CuteFTP, SmartFTP or FileZilla, Please make a note of changes on the steps :

  1. FTP will not work on port 21 (Default FTP port), works only with port 990
  2. FTP url (ftp://ftp.example.com) will not work on browser
  3. You have to use Port 990 and Implicit SSL option (All client FTP software have this option) on client FTP software to do FTP on our server.

We hope you'd appreciate that this is done to enhance the security & ensure that your site remains clean, any inconvenience caused due to this is deeply regretted. Please feel free to contact us for any further assistance.
